Lamar, CO—For people with chronic health conditions, good medical care is just part of the equation for maintaining good health. Equally important is the ability to make healthy decisions, following the recommendations of your provider and proper monitoring of your condition.
Healthier Living Colorado, offered by High Plains Community Health Center, is a workshop which helps people with chronic conditions to manage their health. Chronic health conditions include: diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and many other conditions. Participants that have taken a Healthier Living Colorado workshop report having less pain, more energy and fewer hospitalizations.
Two (2) workshops are now open for enrollment:
Healthier Living Colorado – open to individuals with any type of chronic condition or their caregiver. Classes will be held on Thursday mornings at the Strainhurst Apartment community room, in Lamar, from 9:00 – 11:30 am, beginning January 9, 2014. You do not need to be a patient of High Plains to attend.
Healthier Living Colorado for Diabetes – this workshop will be held at the High Plains Wiley Clinic, 302 South Main Street, in Wiley. Classes will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 – 4:30 pm, beginning on January 15, 2014. This workshop is for anyone with Diabetes or their caregiver. There is a significant need for support for people with chronic diseases, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls the most common, costly and preventable of all health problems in the United States. Chronic Disease is also the leading causes of death and disability, responsible for seven out of 10 deaths each year. The situation is even worse in Prowers County, where the percentage of the population that suffers from one or more chronic diseases is significantly higher than the Colorado norm.
“The good news,” says High Plains Community Health Center physician, Margaret Loewen, MD, RD, “is that people who know how to take care of their health conditions can live successfully with their disease. The Healthier Living Colorado workshops are a wonderful complement to medical care, equipping people to live well outside the doctor’s office so they can make the most of their treatment, and live the lives they want.”
Each of the Healthier Living Colorado workshops are delivered in six, two-and-a-half-hour, weekly sessions. The workshops are led by two certified facilitators; either one or both are non-health professionals who have a chronic disease themselves and can speak from their own experience. Enroll today by calling a Health Coach at High Plains Community Health Center, 719-336-0261.
