Never Ending War on Weeds & Blight

Every day, Monday through Friday, the Lamar Police Department issues a ‘rounds’ report, a synopsis of what the Lamar Police Officers have encountered in a 24 hour span of patrol duty around the City of Lamar.

After reading these for a summer, or for five or more years as a reporter, you notice a trend and it substantiates some of the discussions held by the Mayor of Lamar, Roger Stagner, the City Administrator, John Sutherland and the Lamar City Council and the Lamar Police Department. Essentially, the residents of this city and various property owners need to get busy. The spring rains have contributed to a lot of weed growth in the city, but wet or dry, weeds are going to grow. And those that grow above a certain height on a property need to be taken down.

By the amount of these notices over a week’s span, Officers Inman and Davis should have perpetual writer’s cramp; and these numbers are pretty representative of each week in the spring and summer months. There were 226 separate listings of officer response from July 20 to July 28 of this year and of those, the Code Enforcement Officers wrote 101 of their own and that’s not counting the responses for animal control, so you can tack on about another 50 or 60 calls to this week. The City has reduced the amount of time that property owners are afforded to react or rope-a-dope a response on their part, but given the scope of need these reports indicate, we should be hearing a lot more lawn mowers around our city neighborhoods. Other, similar enforcement areas include illegally posted handbills, junk vehicles, trash, debris and furniture on properties and tall weeds along alleyways which are the adjacent homeowners responsibility.  The City officials are doing all that they are legally allowed, but there’s a point where you have to take personal responsibility for the way you treat your neighborhood.
