Jessica Swanson, General Surgeon Joins Healthcare Team at Prowers Medical Center

Dr. Jessica Swanson is the newest addition to the Healthcare Team as a part-time General Surgeon joining Dr. James Smith at Prowers Medical Center. We welcome Dr. Swanson to Southeast Colorado and are excited to expand the scope and quality of surgical services we can offer.

Although born in Iowa, she moved to Colorado at an early age and grew up in the small town of Kersey in Northeast Colorado. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she studied Biology and English Literature, and then completed medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. She moved from there to Hartford, Connecticut, for her General Surgery residency training, where she served her last year as Administrative Chief Resident. Finally, she pursued her interest in laparoscopic surgery with a Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. During those years of surgery training, she had the opportunity to summit the highest peaks in New England, as well as the opportunity to take two trips to the Dominican Republic as part of a surgical mission team. She also met her husband-to-be, Rob, in early 2009, on a ski trip in Pennsylvania.

After completing her training, Dr. Swanson had the opportunity to return to Colorado in summer 2009 to begin her practice as a general/laparoscopic surgeon in south Denver. She performed surgery at Parker Adventist Hospital (where she served on the OR steering committee and was elected to the Medical Executive Committee) and Sky Ridge Medical Center. She then married her husband in 2011. They live in Denver and enjoy spending time with her family in Colorado Springs, as well as their church family, and being outdoors with their two West Highland White Terriers, Angus and Seamus.

Dr. Swanson looks forward to the opportunity to serve the Prowers County community. She would like to extend office hours to include a Saturday clinic for patients’ convenience, and hopes to expand the breast surgery services and patient education provided by the hospital. She performs a variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures and routine general surgery cases.
