The late-season run of the Granada Bobcats came to an end last Saturday, as they fell in their Region 3 final against Holly. Granada went 5-1 in February, and went into the regional field as the #4 seed, thanks to their second place finish in the District 2 tournament.
The Bobcats dominated #9 Elbert in their opening round game on Friday at Massari Arena in Pueblo. The Bulldogs, who finished third in District 7, trailed 18-9 after one quarter and they never really threatened the Bobcats after that. Granada led 31-17 at the half and added five more to its lead with another 13-8 period in the third. Behind Koy Palmer’s 24 points, the Bobcats eliminated the Bulldogs, 55-37.
On Saturday afternoon, the Bobcats met their rivals from Holly, with a trip to state on the line. Both teams made the Great 8 last season, so one was guaranteed a return visit. Each had picked up a win in their two earlier meetings this season. Granada struggled to get the offense going in the first half against the big starting line-up of the Wildcats. Facing two 6’7” post players, the Bobcats had multiple shots blocked in the first half, and they trailed 25-15 at the half. Granada only managed two points in the third quarter, all but sealing its fate. Holly would finish the day with a 46-31 victory.
Granada will get a shot at Holly on the baseball diamond in two weeks, as the sixth-ranked Bobcats visit #7 Holly on March 25. That will be the season-opener for the Bobcats.
