Scooter Driver Hurt in Rocky Ford Crash

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two vehicle, serious injury crash that occurred on Colorado 50 about two miles west of Rocky Ford on Monday, September 9, 2013 at about 2135 hours (9:35pm).
A 2000 Dodge Caravan, driven by Maryah Perez, of Olney Springs, Colorado, was westbound on Colorado 50 when the Caravan struck a 50 cc, two wheel scooter, operated by William Gonzales, of Rocky Ford. The scooter was also westbound on Colorado 50 at the time it was struck by the Caravan. After impact, the operator of the scooter was ejected from the scooter and thrown onto the westbound shoulder of Colorado 50. The Caravan came to a controlled stop west of the point of impact.
The operator of the scooter was transported with serious injuries to AVRMC in La Junta and flown out by Flight for Life. The operator of the scooter was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the Caravan was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt. The crash is still under investigation, and it is unknown at this time if speed, drugs, or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
