Carmen J. Ortiz…July 16, 1922 – January 12, 2016

A Mass of Christian Burial for Carmen J. Ortiz will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Las Animas, Colorado. Father William Gleason will officiate. A rosary/scripture service will be held at 9:30 a.m. also at the church Friday, January 15, 2016. Interment will follow in the Bent/Las Animas Cemetery in Las Animas, CO. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Lamar, CO. and prior to service time at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Carmen was born July, 16, 1922 to Anastacia (Jaramillo) Trujillo in Emplazado, New Mexico. She moved to Las Animas, CO. in 1951 where she was an ardent member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Carmen also volunteered at the Catholic Church second hand store for 24 years. She then moved to Lamar in July of 2013 and lived at Strainhurst Apartments. She passed away at Lamar Estates in Lamar, CO. at the age of 93.

Carmen is survived by her son, Joseph “Mike” (Sandi) Ortiz of Milliken, CO; daughter, Nida (Leroy) Martinez of Lamar, CO; brothers, Seferino (Corine) Trujillo of Tremintina, NM, Don (Connie) Trujillo of Commerce City, CO; sister, Lena Herrera of Las Vegas, NM; 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Carmen is preceded in death by her mother, Anastacia Trujillo; husband, Filiberto Ortiz; brothers, Mike Trujillo, and Ben Trujillo; and sister, Lila McFarlin.
