Safer Workers at Less Expense. New Feature in Use Near Lamar

Steel Highway Construction Barrier

Steel Highway Construction Barrier

Colorado uses first steel barrier on Highway 50 – Positive protection for construction zone workers

Highway construction is a dangerous job, vehicles traveling at high rates of speed often within inches of workers and equipment. The 2015 annual report from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) stated 46% of highway work zones will have at least one crash this year.

Deploying concrete barriers is a slow and costly part of work zone and bridge rehabilitation. Trying to reduce traffic congestion, Contractors do much of this work at night which raises the risk factor for both workers and motorists due to tired, impaired or inattentive drivers.

A revolutionary new steel barrier, BarrierGuard 800, is being installed near Lamar in eastern Colorado along Highway 50. Steel barrier is twice as fast to install and weighs only 60 pounds per foot compared to concrete barrier at 500 pounds per foot.

The steel barrier installation team from Dynamic Deflections of Pueblo Colorado said “Another benefit is that 80% fewer trucks are required for transportation of the barrier since 600 feet of steel barrier can be transported per truckload versus 100 feet of portable concrete barrier, saving time and money.”
