Be Bold: Girls in the Middle-2015

Law Enforcement1On Friday, April 3, more than 50 middle school girls from the surrounding area schools attended the Girls in the Middle Conference held at Lamar Community College. The day was packed with fun-filled activities beginning with a welcome by Cheryl Sanchez, Vice President of Academic Services and Student Services.

After a friendly welcome, keynote speaker Andrea Reinert gave a wonderful and inspiring message to the girls about goals and the importance of women in the world.  She incorporated the theme ‘Be Bold’ into her talk with the girls and gave many of them the courage to be bold throughout the day’s activities.

After the morning’s speakers, the attendees broke into groups depending on their interest in a specific field of employment.  These groups were led by ten of Lamar Community College’s finest female students: Kelsey Grimaldo, Tallie Harmon, Ashlyn Hess, Gabriela Jimenez, Vanessa Maestas, Kristina Robertson, Sheridan Rushton, Breanna Simonds, DJ Vigil, and Shayne Ybarra.  These leaders took their groups to different break-out sessions, of which each group attended two.  A variety of sessions were offered for the girls to choose from including Agriculture, Banking, Law Enforcement, Advertising, Engineering, Counseling, Dentistry, Nursing, and Library Science.

LCC student and group leader Tallie Harmon attended the event when she was in middle school.  “I’m amazed to see how much the program has changed since I participated in this event,” she stated. “I’m so glad that I now have the opportunity to impact someone else’s life the way mine was with Girls in the Middle.”

Tie-dye3After a quick lunch provided by Pizza Hut, the girls moved on to two afternoon activities.  First, was a tie-dye event, where attendees dyed the shirts they received from the program. Then the groups participated in a team-building activity where they worked together to build the largest structure they could out of balloons, tape, and straws.

Team-building exercise winnersOverall, Girls in the Middle 2015 was a great success.  Plans are currently underway for the 2016 conference, which will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016.
