Bernice B Smith, age 97, of Lamar, Colorado passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Prowers Medical Center.

Bernice was a native of Lamar, Colorado, born on October 17, 1917.  She was the daughter of Michael and Sadie Bachman and was born on the farm just north of Lamar.  As a child she went to Alta Vista School and later graduated from Lamar Union High School.

She was married to Paul (Shorty) Smith on May 23, 1935 and took up residence later at the farm where they began their family and farmed for a number of years.

She was with the Lamar School district for 30 years.  She retired from Lamar High School as secretary to the Principal in 1983.

She enjoyed almost everything: cooking and entertaining friends, arrowhead and rock hunting, flower arranging and traveling (anywhere, anytime). She created ceramics, arts and crafts of all kinds.  And lastly, there is one less avid sports fan in America and her teams will miss her terribly.

Bernice is survived by only one of her three sons and his wife, Kurt and Barbara, and her sister, Audrey Coats, as well as her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, a brother and one daughter-in-law.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice in care of Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 950, Lamar, Colorado 81052.
