The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a traffic crash involving a Tractor-Trailer combination hauling diesel, which resulted in one fatal in Bent County just west of Las Animas.
The 2014 Kenworth Tractor pulling a tanker trailer was traveling eastbound on Colorado 50. As the Kenworth entered a curve, the trailer began to roll. The Kenworth continued eastbound, going off the right side of the road, colliding with two delineator posts. While off road, the Kenworth rolled 1¾ times coming to rest on its left side facing northeast.
The Kenworth’s driver, 52-year-old Donald Chambers of Pueblo West, CO, was restrained at the time of the crash, but died as a result of his injuries. Mr. Chambers was pronounced deceased by the Bent County Coroner.
The crash resulted in several hundred gallons of diesel fuel to be leaked and that Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Material Team handled the spill. Due to the crash and spill Colorado 50 was closed for several hours.
Drugs and alcohol are not being considered as contributing factors to the crash. The primary factor of the crash is exceeding the posted speed limit.
