Southeast Area—Prowers County 4-H is sending a Catch a Calf contestant, market swine and goat exhibitors to the annual National Western Stock Show (NWSS) January 9-25. This year Angelina Downing; Dalton and Coen Lewis, and Lexy and Sterling Koehn, and Makendra, Makenzie, Leandra Melgoza and Makayla Torres will exhibit their livestock.
Downing began her project last January when she caught a calf in front of 10,000 spectators at one of the NWSS PRCA rodeo performances. In May she traveled to the NWSS grounds to meet her fellow exhibitors and pick up her market steer. She named him Cantankerous, Tank for short, after the long drive home. She has been working with him since May and has shown him at the Sand and Sage junior livestock show and at the Holly Gateway Fair. She has written letters to her steer sponsor each month and looks forward to showing her sponsor and the committee what she has been able to accomplish over the past year.
The Lewis, Koehn and Torres families are continuing on their already busy market livestock operations at the national level. All have exhibited at the Colorado State Fair, but are anxiously looking forward to the NWSS. They will face off against market exhibitors from all over the United States. Look for results later in the month.
