La Junta Crash Injures Adults, Children

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle injury crash, which occurred on Colorado State Highway 10 at Otero County Road 23.

A farm tractor, driven by Robert L Klinkerman of La Junta, was attempting to make a left had turn on to Otero County Road 23 when it was struck on it’s left side by a 2008 Toyota. The Toyota, driven by Michael Szmutko of La Junta, was attempting to pass the tractor while the tractor was negotiating it’s turn.

All parties on scene were transported to Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center due to sustained injuries. Both drivers we able to be released with minor injuries. Two children ages 9 and 3 sustained serious bodily injury, one was transported via Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver.

All parties involved were using seatbelts properly. No alcohol or drugs are suspected. The factors leading to the crash are still under investigation.
