The weather people are predicting a bright and sunny Saturday with seasonal temperatures for Lamar’s annual Oktoberfest, October 4, at the Lamar Chamber of Commerce on East Beech Street.
Vendors will be set up at the chamber parking lot which will be the morning site for the 18th Annual Toys for Tots Fun Run Car & Motorcycle Show. Registration for the fundraising run begins at 9am and all proceeds are used by the Prowers County Toys for Tots campaign. The Poker Run is held in the afternoon with a 50/50 drawing and motorcycle games are set for the afternoon.
Once the bikes are on their way, the runners and walkers start getting signed up for the annual Beer & Brats for Boobies 5K Walk/Run. All the proceeds from the entrants are donated to Southeast Colorado Cancer Initiative. Contestants can either walk or run a set course which allows those who are old enough to quaff a beer on their route. Brats and other beverages are available for those too young for beer. And of course, the more colorfully decorated each runner is in a pink motif, the better it is for all involved. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Linked in Pink has become the means to heighten awareness of the disease which strikes one in every eight women in the country. Various local medical providers are using the month to promote their services and awareness campaigns through October.
This Saturday is also a good time for those who want to visit with neighbors, enjoy a brew or two in the beer tent, soak up some sunshine, eat just a little more than what’s good for your waistline and do some shopping with local vendors. Music will be provided by JUDI, Little Wing and the Ark Valley Wind & Percussion Ensemble through the day, and inflatable rides will be available for the youngsters. Performances are also scheduled by Wild West Athletics and All the Right Moves. Rides on a mechanical bull are also set for Saturday’s entertainment.
Participants will also get a look at some of the paving work that’s underway at the parking lot directly opposite the Chamber of Commerce on East Beech Street. The property was sold to the City of Lamar earlier this year and plans are being formulated to open the area to the community. If people have another moment, the Lamar Library has a ribbon cutting on the H.U.B. Kid’s Computer Room. The event will run between 11am and 11:45am Saturday morning.
