Alonzo F. Welch, Jr. passed away on September 18, 2014 at his home in Lamar, Colorado at the age of 77.  He was born to Alonzo F. Welch, Sr. and Ethel (Johnson) Welch on August 25, 1937 in Springfield, CO.

He grew up and lived most of his life in Lamar, CO.  He married the love of his life, Evelyn (Toland) Welch on Oct. 19, 1955.   Five children followed – John (deceased), Glen (Dora) of Leavenworth, KS, Victoria Welch of Cullman, AL, Valerie Norman (Michael) of Fort Collins, CO, and Joel of Denver, CO.

Alonzo’s childhood was filled with experiences at the family ranch in Baca County and many close calls with rattlesnakes and hailstorms.  His early work years included delivering the U.S. mail to the trains as they rolled through Lamar.  In 1967, he went to work for W.H.O. Manufacturing where he was described as “the best machinist in Colorado” for 30 years. He also brought in custom lathe work from places around the world.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Lamar Area Hospice and/or Lamar Christian Church in care of Peacock Funeral Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Ethel Welch, his brother Frank, sisters Wanda and Evelyn, and son John.  He also leaves behind six grandchildren; Amie, Alexus, Jeremy, Jason, Krystal and Travis, two great-grandchildren; Bethany and Liam Alonzo as well as his two sisters; Virginia (Ken) White and Ernestine (Bill) Lucia.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00PM, Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Lamar Christian Church with Rev. Ray Matteson officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 1:00PM until 7:00PM at the Peacock Family Chapel. The family will greet friends from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Wednesday.
