The Prowers County Sheriff’s Department responded to 3,353 calls for service in 2013.  Lamar led the way with 1,808 calls, followed by the County with 1,051; Holly had 330 requests and Wiley had 100.  Lamar had the most jail related calls at 695 and 178 warrant arrests. 

The Sheriff’s Department noted 189 investigation cases were cleared for 2013 resulting in charges for 148 and nine investigations are still active into 2014.  A total of 1,264 persons were booked into the County Jail for 2013, compared to a five year average of 1,200.  951 males were booked in 2013 compared to the five year average of 912.  Female bookings for last year were 313, compared to the five year average of 293.  The jail averaged 45.6 inmates per day through last year and the average stay for males was 12 days, 9 hours.  For females, the figures were about half at 6 days, nine hours. 

The Prowers County Courthouse saw 74,349 persons screened in 2013 for a daily average of 293.  Courthouse security made 82 arrests for individuals entering the building with warrants  against them.   

The Sheriff’s Department made 16 arrests for various drug possession violations, resulting in a total bond for all 16 at $194,000.  Nine were arrested for possession of methamphetamine, two for cocaine and two for synthetic marijuana with intent to sell.  Others were for some form of either possession or intent to sell.  Sheriff Deputies and Posse members were called out on June 17, 2013 to assist Prowers County residents with flooding along Highway 196 and other locations in the county.  Some residents were evacuated from their homes until flood waters subsided.  Deputies also assisted in the search of a missing hunter on December 29.  James Bailey, 71, of Alamosa had been missing for 20 hours and was found by search planes and taken to Prowers Medical Center for dehydration and exposure. 

The cost of inmate meals in 2013 was $126,157.45.    Expenses for medical treatment came to $14,002.99.  Total expenses for the Prowers County Sheriff’s Department was $2,022,638.69 and revenue for 2013 was $372,702.94.
