Bent’s New Fort
It’ll take more than a government shutdown to halt the dedication of the Bent’s New Fort site. Your Santa Fe Trail Association, the Bent’s Fort Chapter, and the Semmen’s family will make sure that the ceremony will take place. National Park Service personnel will not be allowed to officially participate but may be spotted among the crowd stealthily clad in their civvies.
This dedication is our chapter’s official event for the month of October and all BFC members and friends are invited to attend. And, this event is a major one for our chapter, the SFTA, and all lovers of southwestern history. It’s been over 150 years since the public has had access to this historic site. Now, thanks to the generosity of the Semmens-McCall families we can all walk on the actual site of the trading post.
Meet at the site at 2:00 pm for the presentations. At 4:00, everyone is invited to a reception at The Lodge at Country Acres, 29151 US Hwy 287, Lamar, CO.
To reach the site, take US Hwy 50 to County Road 35, approximately 10 miles west of Lamar or 25 miles east of Las Animas. Turn south on County Road 35 for 1 mile to County Road JJ (dead end). Turn east (left) and drive 1/4 mile, turning south (right) onto County Road 35.25 for 1/4 mile to the Bent’s New Fort parking lot. Walk up the two-track road from the parking lot to fort site.
