Galen N. Sears…December 23, 1919 – September 8, 2013

                Celebration of Life services for Galen Sears will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Holly, Colorado with Rev. Ralph Plummer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Holly Cemetery.  Visitation for Galen will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Holly, Colorado. 

 

Galen Norris Sears passed away September 8, 2013 after an extended illness at the age of 93.  Galen was born December 23, 1919 in Holly, Colorado to Harold and Mabel (Fowler) Sears.  After he graduated from Holly High School he married Audrey Adeline Hart on June 16, 1937.  Galen worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in California until he was injured in an explosion.  He enlisted in the US Army during WWII, but due to his injury was released from the military at which time he moved his family back to Holly and began farming west of town.  Galen and Audrey opened and ran a busy floral shop and agricultural seed sales business in Holly.  Galen also enjoyed a very successful career as an insurance salesman for Farm Bureau.  He was also very active in the Prowers County Republican Party, and for a time served as the Prowers County Party Chairman.  Galen also enjoyed music and sang at weddings, funerals and just for the love of singing.  In 1972, Galen and Audrey sold the flower shop business and moved to Lamar, CO.  Audrey passed away in March of 1975 after a brief battle with breast cancer.  Galen remained active in both the local and state Republican Party where he met Barbara (Bobbie) Raines of La Junta with whom he had a relationship until his death.  He lived in La Junta until he was moved to the Fowler Nursing Home after succumbing to Alzheimer’s.

 

 Galen is survived by his sister, Lorene Williams of Westminster, CO; son, Winston Sears and wife, Amy of Anchorage, AK; daughter, Karen Benson and husband, Steven of Aurora, CO; daughter, Rita (Galene) Cutts and husband, Craig of Rogers, AR; son, Stanley and wife, Jo D of Lakewood, CO; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

                He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mabel Sears; wife, Audrey (Hart) Sears; and brother, Roland (Buddy) Sears.
