Two inmates escaped from the Bent County Jail early today, August 23, when they climbed through the window of a work release cell, after smashing it with a tv stand. Bent County Undersheriff Tandy Hasser said sheriff’s deputies gave immediate pursuit and were assisted in the search by six other surrounding law enforcement agencies.
The two didn’t get far. They are identified as 27 year old Danny Vigil and 23 year old Omar Perez, both of Rocky Ford. They will be facing additional charges of escape for their one hour of illegal freedom. Hasser said they were on foot when they were found, near the river bottom and south of Poplar Street in Las Animas. They escaped from the jail at 9:20am and were caught about one hour later.
They were not together when they were apprehended; one was caught by the Colorado State Patrol and Otero County Sheriff’s Office and the other, just a few minutes later, by Bent County Officers.
