* LOCATION…ALL OF THE SOUTHEAST COLORADO PLAINS.

* CAUSE AND TIMING…A STRONG COLD FRONT DRIVEN BY A POWERFUL
JET STREAM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION TODAY.

* WIND…WESTERLY AT 35 TO 45 MPH GUSTING TO 60 MPH AT TIMES.

* IMPACT…PROPERTY DAMAGE…POWER DISRUPTIONS…AND HAZARDOUS   TRAVEL CONDITIONS. BLOWING DUST MAY REDUCE VISIBILITIES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

HIGH WINDS CAPABLE OF CAUSING POWER OUTAGES AND PROPERTY DAMAGE ARE EXPECTED.

THESE WINDS CAN CAUSE LIGHTWEIGHT OBJECTS TO BECOME DANGEROUS AIRBORNE PROJECTILES. HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES AND VEHICLES PULLING TRAILERS CAN BE FLIPPED BY CROSSWINDS. BLOWING DUST CAN QUICKLY REDUCE VISIBILITY TO NEAR ZERO…RESULTING IN HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS AND ACCIDENTS INVOLVING MOTORISTS TAKEN BY SURPRISE.


BLOWING DUST OR SAND CAN ALSO BE A HEALTH HAZARD FOR THOSE WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS. SECURE LIGHTWEIGHT OBJECTS. AVOID TRAVELING ON ROADS WITH CROSSWINDS.

Subject: School Message Broadcast

Due to the high winds and poor visibility being experienced this Friday afternoon,  Alta Vista, Parkview and Washington Grade Schools will be released at 2:45 p.m.

Lamar Middle School and Lamar High School will be released at 3:00 p.m.

This evening’s high school basketball games have been postponed and the teen center will be closing at 4:45 p.m.

Highway 50 between La Junta and Fowler has been closed due to winds.
