Game Recap LCC Women’s Basketball vs Howard College

The LCC women’s basketball team held off a strong Howard College team 63-62 and winning their 3rd straight game to start the 2012-13 season.

LCC’s Ellie Stevens had 23 points and six rebounds on 7-of-22 shooting as the game went back and forth during the second half between the two teams.

Howard College (1-1) had five players score in double-digits, led by Tori Tucker’s 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting and 4-of-7 shooting from the charity stripe.

The Runnin’ Lopes (3-0) finished 21-of-62 from the field on 28 percent shooting while the Lady Raiders knocked down nearly 34 percent of their shots. The difference in the game being the Runnin’ Lopes forced Howard into 24 turnovers, while collecting 16 steals..

It was a game of scoring runs in the second half as Howard College came out and knocked down key shots and built a 9 point lead on LCC with 12:07 left.

After LCC women’s basketball Head Coach Timm Dixon called a timeout, the Runnin’ Lopes responded with a 12-2 run of their own though – keyed by three pointers by Shea Marbaugh – to climb back into the game and hold on to the win.

The Lady Lopes were keyed by their bench with Shea Marbaugh having 10 points, and Alexus Ramirez coming in the game to hit key free throws to seal the win.

“We showed great poise tonight,” said LCC Women’s Basketball Head Coach Timm Dixon . “We stayed positive and stayed together. We talk about winning every five possessions and my team stayed calm even when we were behind. Our next game will be a great test for us against a fast team from Northwest Technical College. We will really need to rebound and play great defense to win that game.”

The Runnin’ Lopes will be back in action Tuesday, November 13 against Northwest Tech (0-4) in the Wellness Center at 5:30pm before heading to La Junta to play in the Otero Classic, Friday and Saturday at 1:00pm
