Community Awards Presented at Voces Unidas Banquet

Voces Unidas in Lamar began its 6th year of operation with their annual banquet and meeting this past Saturday, October 13, at the Lamar Eagles Lodge.

The keynote speaker for the festivities was Jermaine Stafford, SER Director of Youth and Community Service Division. He is employed by the Rocky Mountain SER Corporate Office.  Stafford recounted his sports career and the coaches who helped shape his career, from his years of development as a world-class sprinter, to being a part of the olympic track and field team, to a pro sports career in football. His told the gathering of about 100, that his past helped shape him into becoming a youth mentor, helping to develop various athletic programs through his corporate contacts.

Aaron Hope and his crew provided the buffet meal and the audience was entertained by the singing talents of Dante and Jaclyn Gutierrez. KVAY announcers, Matt Sizemore and Travis Williams, kept the evening moving as they introduced guests and recapped the highlights of the past year for Voces Unidas, a branch of the Lamar Chamber of Commerce that benefits the community through their ethnic diversification and fund-raising events such as the annual Cinco de Mayo day which helps raise three scholarships for students attending Lamar Community College and Otero Junior College, the annual Mother’s Day Rose fundraiser, a swim party for area students, the DECA Coat Drive, Toys and Tots and other, similar events.

The new officers for the 2012-2013 year were highlighted including incoming president, Gerri Jenkins, vice-president Kirk Crespin, secretary Esther Lingle, treasurer Brenda Estrada and historian Denise Estep. Community Service Awards were also presented to cap the evening.

Lifetime Achievement: Joey, the K9 police dog, who is retiring after five years with the LPD.

Education Citizen of the Year: Shannon Montgomery
Health Services Citizen of the Year: Physical Therapy Group at Prowers Medical Center
Municipal Citizen of the Year: Lamar Streets and Sanitation Department
Community Citizen of the Year: Doug Harbour
