Sand & Sage Fair Feature Fireworks, Concerts and the Saturday Parade

2011 Carnival Rides at Sand and Sage Fair

The annual Sand and Sage Fair is underway in Prowers County, highlighted to date by the Sunday evening concert and fireworks display.  The 4H Horse Show was held last weekend, on July 28, and various 4-H judging began this past Saturday, August 4 including Dog Obedience and the Fashion Revue Judging at Lamar High School.

About 500 persons attended the Sunday night concerts, featuring Gwen Sebastian and Craig Campbell.  “It was a little light as far as the number of people who showed,” said Fair Board member, Diane Pool, “But the entertainment was first class, and that’s what we always hope to present,” she added.  Because of the fireworks ban over the Fourth of July, the local volunteer fire department decided to cap the concert with a display using half of the rockets, and the remainder will be shot off on New Year’s Eve.

This week features Family Night at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, Kid’s Day on Wednesday, barrel racing and the ham and bean and cornbread dinner on Thursday, as well as the Friday and Saturday BBQ and Rodeo on August 10 and 11.  Crabtree Amusements will have their carnival rides open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.

Pool reminded parade goers that the Saturday parade will begin at 10am, travelling from South Main Street, north up Main Street to Poplar Street.  Parade entries should gather along Forrest Street and near Willow Creek Park for the lineup.
