Cowboys, Horses and Guns

Taking Aim from the Saddle

Colorado Mounted Thunder out of Pueblo, a cowboy mounted shooting event, will be held at the Prowers County Fairgrounds this Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29.

Local event organizer, Axel Thurner said the competition is set to start at about 10am each day with Saturday’s competition running to 6pm and Sunday’s will last until 4pm.

Balloons are the targets, with riders hoping to blast away as many as possible while mounted on a galloping horse through a pre-determined course through barrels and gates at the Fairgrounds Arena.  Special short-range black powder blanks are used in competition for rifles and pistols.  Riders are also competing for cash prizes with a 50% circuit payback.  Saturday’s competition will feature riders using all forms of weaponry such as pistol, rifle and shotgun.  Sunday competitors will use pistol only.

Competition Will Run April 28 and 29 at Prowers County Fairgrounds

Thurner has been involved in the competition for a while, and several months ago, secured some funding from the Prowers County Lodging Panel to help market the event locally and regionally.  Forty-five contestants are expected for the two day event which is free to the public.
