Who are the Eagles? At one time everyone asks that question. The Eagles are a fraternal organization of over one million members worldwide and about 350 men and women locally. We are known throughout the United States and Canada as “people helping people”, and often times we have fun doing it! The Fraternal Order of Eagles raises millions of dollars each year and 100% is returned in the form of grants. The Eagles make charitable donations to local charities like Southeastern Colorado Cancer Initiative and Lamar Youth Sports just to name a couple. The Eagles also offer a few scholarships for college every year that are open to any student that would like to apply and go through the process to possibly receive a scholarship.
A brief history of the Eagles would start in Seattle, Washington in 1898 by six competitive theater owners who gathered to solve a common problem. Having solved their problem, their competitiveness changed to camaraderie and eventually gave birth to the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The Eagles stand for Liberty, Truth, Justice and Equality. For Home, For Country and For God.
A few of the Eagle’s accomplishments include Mother’s Day. During an Eagles Memorial Service in 1904, Frank E. Hering’s keynote address is recognized as the “First Public Plea” for a day to honor mothers. It was through the Eagles that the concept for Mother’s Day first spread across the country. Social Security is another area; when President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, he presented the pen to the Eagles for our “vision and courage” in making it happen. Jobs After 40 is another; when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed this bill that ended age discrimination in the work place, he presented the pen to the Eagles and said, “The Eagles started this whole idea.” Medicare; when President Johnson signed the bill he presented the pen to the Eagles and said, “For your energetic and dedicated espousal of social justices, and the compassionate treatment of the sick and disabled.”
Our Mission- The Fraternal Order of Eagles, is an international, non-profit organization that unites fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice and equality. To make human life more desirable by lessening its ills, and by promoting peace, prosperity, gladness and hope.
