Prowers Democrats Hold County Assembly this Saturday

Prowers County Democrats will hold their Assembly, March 31st, 2012,   2:00 – 4:00 pm, at the Cow Palace Inn, Lamar, Colorado.   All registered Democrats are invited to attend.     The Assembly agenda will include delegates, determined at the March 6th caucus; to vote on:

1)  Nominations and ratification of the Democrat candidates for Prowers County Commissioner.

2)  Election of delegates to represent Prowers County in the State Democratic Convention, Pueblo, April 14th, 2012.

3)  Resolution in opposition to the NDAA.

Guest speakers at the Assembly will include candidates for:  U.S. Congressional  District 4 (CD4)  Brandon Shaffer (current President of the Colorado Senate and challenger to U.S. Congressman Cory Gardner);   Colorado Senate District 35 (SD35)  Crestina Martinez  (current Costilla County Commissioner) challenging republican candidate Alex Mugatu;    Don Seufer democrat candidate for Prowers County Commissioner, District 1, challenging the eventual republican candidate incumbent Henry Schnabel or Mike Parker;  and Jillane Hixson and Doug Thrall , democrat candidates for Prowers County Commissioner, District 3.    Pending the “Assembly” and “Primary Election” results,   Hixson or Thrall will challenge the republican candidate, either Roger Stagner or Wendy Buxton.     The June 26th primary election will determine the republican &/or democratic candidate(s) who will proceed to the general election November 6th, 2012.

The above mentioned resolution condemns the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), originally enacted by President Bush and since renewed by President Obama.   The NDAA provisions violate many important protections provided for in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights; for all criminal suspects, inclusive of US citizens.    These provisions suspend basic rights and due process; allows for arrest without warrant, without trial or attorney, indefinite detention and torture of accused persons.   The resolution is a statewide bi-partisan effort to obtaining all 64 County Commissioner Boards to denounce NDAA enforcement in Colorado and will be presented to the Colorado State Legislature, and U.S. Senators Udall and Bennett.    The resolution was recently presented to the Prowers County Commissioners, March 13th, and is on the BOCC agenda, March 29th, for their signature.
