Outstanding Tourism Sponsor; Lamar Lodging Tax Board was selected for their exemplary support of fostering the growth of the tourism industry through preservation, heritage business development, and education of the public about tourism in southeast Colorado. The Lamar Lodging Tax board has stood as a sustaining sponsor for Canyons & Plains during the challenging years of the initial start-up process.
For the 2011 Outstanding Tourism Business; Rick and Tina Ross of the Lamar Theater were selected for their outstanding visionary support of the project that created seven public service announcement video shorts produced to run in the local historic theaters. This project started at a theater networking meeting sponsored by Canyons & Plains in 2007 that was hosted at the Lamar theater. Out of this meeting, the idea to produce movie shorts of local historic sites to run before films in the region’s theaters was born. This project came to completion in 2011 through funding of History Colorado and the past federally funded Preserve America Program.
For the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Award; both Jeanne Fenter and Beverly Babb were honored for their extensive time dedicated to projects and work for the Canyons & Plains organization. Beverly Babb of LaJunta volunteers to receive all leads coming to the organization from the annual Audubon Advertorial. She sends the leads out to members then, responds to all leads with a mailing and information about the region’s tourism sites and heritage opportunities. Jeanne Fenter has dedicated thousands of hours to the organization through her work on grant writing and management for Canyons and Plains. Many of the grants that Canyons & Plains has received for over the past several years are due to the efforts of Jeanne Fenter and her outstanding networking for the financial stability of the organization. Jeanne’s vision and understanding of the strategic plan and competent leadership have driven the organization to be a success in its first four years of existence as a non-profit.
Exiting board members were also recognized for their time and service to the organization; Pat Palmer, Mary Root for her services as treasurer, and Jeanne Fenter have all served on the Canyons & Plains board for the past four years.
