Be sure to read The Prowers Journal each week when the Lamar Chamber of Commerce
and The Prowers Journal highlight a featured Business of the Week.

This week we are proud to spotlight Daylight Donut, located at  109 South Main in Lamar.

Daylight Donut has been a downtown business at this location for nearly 40 years. Current owners David and Barbara Scriven will celebrate their 12th anniversary in September of this year. David was born and raised in Lamar and Barbara was born and raised in the San Luis Valley. While living in Alamosa we learned that the Daylight Donut in Lamar was for sale. In September of 2000 we sold our home, quit our jobs, and moved to Lamar. This all took place over a period of about 2 1/2 weeks. Our son Zachary had just turned one when we made the move, and has literally grown up in the donut business. We both came from a family-owned business background, but neither one of us had much bakery experience. We had to learn the donut making business from the dough up. Our success has not been without some struggles, but with a lot of hard work, long crazy hours and dedication we have succeeded in making some of the best donuts in town.

We offer both cake and raised donuts with a variety of different icings and toppings. The most popular donut is the original raised glazed donut. Our icing flavors include chocolate, cherry, maple, vanilla and blueberry. Toppings include coconut, nuts, sugar, colorful sprinkles, and cinnamon sugar. Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Saturday’s our specialty cake flavor donut is Blueberry, and Wednesday’s and Friday’s our cake specialty flavor is double rich chocolate. We offer a variety of rolls which include; pine cones, cinnamon circles, honey buns, rosebuds, twists, do knots, butterflies, apple fritters, jelly top rolls, and long johns. Long Johns can be filled with either white angel cream or Bavarian cream. Not all Daylight donut shops offer the white angel cream filling and we have customers that come from as close as Colorado Springs to as far away as Oklahoma to get their filled long johns. We also offer baked cream cheese cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls every Wednesday through Saturday.

A favorite among our customers is the sausage roll, which consists of breakfast sausage links and cheese wrapped in thin donut dough and deep fried. We also have a Cajun pie which is donut dough filled with ground ham, cheese, and jalapeños and deep fried.

Daylight Donut offers a variety of drinks to go with that donut or sausage roll. We offer Coke fountain drinks, milk, coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, cappuccino, bottles juices, bottled water, iced tea, and bottled frappuccinos.

All of us at Daylight Donut would like to thank our customers for all their support over the last 11 years. Our friendly, outgoing, employees are always ready to help get your morning off to a great start. Our hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 5:00 am. until 12:30 pm., and you can reach us at 336-7911.
