LCC Lady Lopes Get Road Win at Colby

The Lamar Lady Runnin’ Lopes went to Colby, Kansas on Wednesday to take on the Colby Lady Trojans.  Lamar had defeated Colby on the season opener in Lamar, and was able to get the season sweep on the road, defeating the Trojans 56-53.

Colby scored the first basket of the night, taking a two to zero lead.  That would be the only time of the night they would be ahead on the scoreboard, as Lamar went on an 8-0 run and never relinquished the lead.  Maryam Dogo started the scoring for LCC helped by two quick baskets by Micheda Sobers.  The Runnin’ Lopes also finished several first half transition opportunities to take a 37-32 lead into the locker room.

The second half was a defensive battle as each team struggled to score.  Lamar was able to take advantage of their overall quickness and continued to score transition baskets to stretch the lead to nine points, 48-39.  Colby, however, would battle back to cut the lead down to four points with three minutes remaining.

“When Colby cut the lead to four, I think our girls were a little rattled offensively,” said Coach Michael Wells. “We did not take care of the basketball very well, and we didn’t make good decisions. But defensively, we really cranked it up, limiting them to just a couple of free throws.”

Colby’s Marie McAbee made one out of two free throws with just over a minute remaining to cut the lead to 55-53.  However, LaKeisha Blanson was able to secure an offensive rebound for LCC and was fouled as she attempted to make the follow up shot. She made the first shot, but missed the second which gave the ball to Colby with 15 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, the Runnin’ Lopes defense prevented them from taking several three point shot opportunities to tie the game, however, they did manage to put up a last second shot that fell short, hitting the front of the rim.

“We really needed a win like this one tonight,” stated Coach Wells. “We have not been playing particularly well, so having to come out and win a game on sheer hard work is a good feeling. Hopefully, we can build on this win.”

Lamar had three players score in double figures on the night, led by Dogo with 17, followed by Blanson with 13 and Hailey Owen with 11.  Dogo also led the way in rebounding, finishing the game with 16.

The LCC Lady Lopes will be in action again on Friday and Saturday as they host the Lamar Classic. On Friday, LCC plays Seminole State College (OK) and Cisco Junior College (TX) on Saturday.  Both games will be webcast at www.lamartvcolorado.com.
