The Lamar Welcome Center showed a 15% gain in the number of visitors this year compared to last. Center Director, Judy Douglass, said their fiscal year begins in June, and there were 30,594 visitors who stopped by and registered their names with the Center on Main Street in Lamar.
Douglass said she registered 3,773 visitors for June, which was a 13% drop compared to 2010, but the other two summer months showed gains. July was up only 1% at 4,846 and August just closed out, with a 7% increase at 4,109. Lamar is one of eleven state welcome centers in Colorado, serving the southeast corner of the state with Trinidad. Douglass added that the Lamar Center is still open seven days a week, but will be open from 8am to 5pm until Memorial Day, reflecting off-season hours. The Center is open until 6pm from Memorial Day until the Labor Day weekend.
