Colorado State Patrol Press Release: Highway 10 Closed

CDOT - Colorado Department of TransportationBeginning Friday, July 22, 2011, the Colorado Department of Transportation will close State Highway 10 between the cities of Walsenburg and La Junta for significant maintenance operations. The temporary closure is anticipated to last approximately two months while crews complete needed repairs.

Because State Highway 10 is an important and heavily utilized hazardous-materials route in southeastern Colorado, the Colorado State Patrol recommends that hazardous-materials carriers utilize alternate routes. The following route recommendations are valid only while State Highway 10 remains closed to through traffic during the aforementioned maintenance operations:

Carriers hauling route-restricted hazardous materials, as described in §§42-20-301, et seq, C.R.S., are permitted to operate under the following temporary guidelines:

Use State Highway 350—between the cities of La Junta and Trinidad—to access points south of Walsenburg and La Junta, where other designated routes are not practical.  Traffic should transition between State Highway 350 and I-25 by traveling on U.S. Highway 160—between the Beshoar Junction and I-25—via the Kit Carson Bypass (I-25, exit 15).

The currently designated route of U.S. Highway 50 should be utilized to access points west of La Junta and north of Walsenburg.

For questions regarding the closure, contact the Colorado State Patrol’s Hazardous Materials Section at (303) 273-1900.
