Friday Tire Fire

About the same time as the Friday 5 o’clock whistle blew in Lamar, a fire alarm also went off in town. Responders from the Lamar Fire Department were called out to Paulen Grove, between North 9th and 10th Streets in Lamar. A pile of discarded car and truck tires had been set on fire, which caused more smoke than damage. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in short order, but had to take a chainsaw to one of the taller trees which was at the base of the tire pile and also had caught on fire. While the pile of tires was being pulled apart, several that had been smoldering fired up again.
The Lamar Police were on hand, and had a discussion with a resident who called in the alarm. The police were told that a bunch of young boys, probably between the ages of 8 to 13, had been seen playing in the area shortly before the fire.
