2011 Colorado Wheat Field Day in Southeast Colorado

CSU Extension WebsiteThe 2011 Colorado Wheat Field Day will be held June 6th.  The field day is jointly hosted by the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee (CWAC), Colorado Association of Wheat Growers (CAWG), Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF) and Colorado State University (CSU) Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station.

The Field day will highlight new hard red and hard white varieties developed by CSU and other breeding programs in the Great Plains region.  Attention will also be given to special areas of emphasis in wheat breeding at CSU and progress and plans with CWAC funding for CSU wheat research.  This is an opportunity to interact closely with the wheat breeding and research team from CSU.

This year’s Southeast Area’s wheat field day program will include plot tours at Plainsman Research Center, Baca County (Walsh) and at John Stulp Farm, Prowers County (Lamar). Each tour will last about an hour.

CSU Extension Agronomist, Jerry Johnson, will review trial conditions and results from the 2010 testing program and highlight critical areas of emphasis related to agronomic production management.  CSU Wheat Breeder, Dr. Scott Haley, will discuss the characteristics of varieties and experimental lines in the trials as well as several wheat-related research issues including: hard white wheat development, the CWRF/ConAgra program, Russian wheat aphid (RWA) resistance and Clearfield wheat, progress on new wheat research initiatives at CSU, and exciting new hard red and hard white experimental lines in the pipeline.

All wheat producers are urged to attend at least one Colorado Wheat Field day location in the Southeast Area.  For more information, maps, and directions contact your local Extension Office or visit www.coloradowheat.org or call 1-800 WHEAT-10.
