(LAS ANIMAS, COLORADO) Las Animas Assistant Fire Chief Steve Bourne is advising the public to stay away from the Fort Lyon Fire burn area due to the number of dangers in the area.
“We know there is a lot of curiosity about the damage the fire has caused, but burn areas are always very dangerous – even after the fire has been put out,” said Bourne.
Standing trees may be partially burned and weakened, and could fall at any moment. Stumps can burn into the tree roots, creating hidden holes in the ground that can cause serious injuries if stepped in.
In addition, foot traffic and motorized vehicles disturbing the soil will cause further damage that can increase the risk of erosion during rain and can lead to flooding issues.
“We appreciate the public’s cooperation,” stated Bourne. “Your safety is important to us.”
