Jared Smartt Receives SECPA Scholarship

LA JUNTA – Southeast Colorado Power Association is pleased to announce that seven youth from the region have been named winners of college scholarships offered by SECPA, Basin Electric and Tri-State Generation and Transmission.

Eligible applicants for the scholarships were students whose parents are members of the Association and who are high school seniors graduating in 2011 with plans to attend a two or four-year college. Winners were chosen based on their academic accomplishments, school activities and community involvement.

Jared Smartt of Lamar is one of the seven in the region, receiving the Basin Electric $1,000 scholarship.

The son of Kenneth and Diedre Smartt, Jared is a senior at Lamar High School and plans to attend a university and major in applied computing technology. In high school, he has been active in student council, National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, basketball, cross-country, track, gifted and talented and the Engage youth group. His honors include four academic letters, superintendent’s honor roll, University of Colorado Outstanding Junior and Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist. He works part-time at Quizno’s, in the summer as an equipment operator for a local farm and also does car stereo installation and e-bay sales.
