The Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of a fatal injury crash this morning (May 9th), which claimed the life of an Aurora resident. It was believed to have occurred the night before. Shortly before 8:00 this morning, the Colorado State Patrol received a report that a vehicle had been located on its roof, down an embankment in Bent County.
The crash occurred on US Highway 50, milepost 400, at the off ramp with Colorado 194, or just east of the town of Las Animas. A black 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer traveled off the right side of the roadway, across the off ramp for Colorado 194 and collided with a guardrail. The vehicle traveled over the guardrail and went airborne. While airborne, the vehicle collided with three trees, causing it to rotate ½ time and roll ½ time. The vehicle landed approximately 50 feet down an embankment on its roof.
The driver, Roger Hazen (Age 59, of Aurora, Colorado) was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by the Bent County Coroner. He was not wearing his seat belt. Hazen is believed to have been traveling near 70 miles per hour in a stepped down speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Unfamiliarity with location is considered a contributing factor in the crash. Drugs are not suspected to be involved in the crash. It is unknown at this time as to whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. At this time, the State Patrol believes the crash occurred around 10:00 the night before (May 8, 2013).
