Taking a Bead on Speed

A Colorado State Patrol trooper takes aim at vehicles with his radar gun on Highway 287, across from Lamar Middle School on Wednesday afternoon, April 30. Area motorists are familiar with the flashing warning lights posted on opposite sides of the roadway, telling drivers to bring their speed down to 25mph when students are in transit to and from the school. Sometimes they need a reminder.
The trooper and radar gun is not a common practice as drivers usually comply with the posted speed limits. The other area in town that maintains a lower limit during school hours is along Savage Avenue. Given the number of schools, from day care to high school that line that roadway, the slower speed for about a quarter mile is a small price to pay for safety.
