Flat tire, loose spokes, sprung sprocket??? Help is on the way, now that the youth-led, Wheels in Motion bike and skateboard clinic is open for business in downtown Lamar. A grand opening to mark the event was held Friday, June 12 at the shop at the corner of Main and Olive Streets, the former PCDI offices.
Project HOPE students, led by advisor, Byron Hall, have listed a series of repair services, all at nominal fees. The students have been learning their repair skills this past year, working from one of the rooms at the former Lincoln Elementary School. Some tools and parts have been donated by Healthy Places, which sponsored the grand opening event.
Coordinator, Emily Neischburg, said the project is a win-win scenario for the community, working through the Healthy Places initiative and LiveWell Prowers County. Long range goals are to reduce the level of obesity in Prowers County youth, as indicated by reports from the Colorado Department of Health and Environment, showing Prowers County with one of the highest rates in the state. She added that the clinic is looking for kids and adults to sign up and help at the shop this summer. The shop will be open from 1-4pm on Friday afternoons.
This is a youth-led community project that will encourage skill development, business management, volunteer service and customer service opportunities. The bike shop will provide a free lunch from Noon to 1pm on June 24th during Bike to Work Day observances, ride in or walk over to the downtown location. A bike rodeo is set for June 27, Family Fun Day, at Willow Creek Park.
