Shawn Stone Announces Intent to Run for Prowers County Sheriff

My name is Shawn Stone and I am announcing my Republican candidacy for Sheriff of Prowers County in the 2014 election. I was born in Bluffton, Indiana and after graduating high school, I joined the United States Army. I served 3 years in the Army and was honorably discharged from Ft. Carson Colorado. I met my wife, Heather Stone, in Colorado Springs and we moved to Lamar in 1997, so I could start my career in law enforcement.
I started working with the Prowers County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy under Sheriff James Hamilton in 1997. I left the Prowers County Sheriff’s Office to go work for the Lamar Police Department. In my 10 years with the Lamar Police Department, I was promoted to the rank of corporal. I was asked to fill in as acting shift supervisor for several years when there was a vacancy of a sergeant. I was later promoted to the rank of sergeant. During the time I was at the Lamar Police Department I took the initiative to gather information and support to start the first K-9 program for the City of Lamar. With the support of the community, I was able to raise approximately $17,000.00 and got the first K-9, K9 Joey in service.
In 2010 I felt it was time for a change, so I left the Lamar Police Department and accepted a patrol deputy position with the sheriff’s office. For years I have felt the “serve” from the slogan “Protect and Serve” has been fading out. For the past 15 years I have been out on the street seeing and listening first hand to what the citizens want.
The Sheriff is elected by the people therefore should serve the people. Since the Sheriff is elected by the people, I believe if I am elected, I would be directly accountable to the people. All law enforcement officers take an oath to uphold the United States Constitution as well as the laws of the State of Colorado. These days not only does the Sheriff uphold the Colorado State laws but now must defend the laws of the United States Constitution. If elected I would like to minimize my time behind a desk and not lose touch with the citizens or my ability to patrol effectively. It is my belief that the Sheriff’s Deputies should be out on patrol in the County and spend less time in the City limits of Lamar.
If elected Sheriff I assure all people in Prowers County will get the same amount of protection and service. I promise a timely response from the patrol deputies. I assure people will be kept up to date on their cases and all employees at the sheriff’s office will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my announcement. If you share in my beliefs and thoughts, I would ask for your support in the 2014 election.
