Colorado Parks and Wildlife is seeking information about a poaching incident that occurred in southeastern Colorado near the town of Kim. The carcass of a small buck pronghorn was found on a parcel of Comanche National Grassland west of Las Animas CR 179 otherwise known as the Villegreen rd. on Oct. 6.
On the afternoon of Oct. 6, Wildlife Officer Mike Brown was approached by several concerned hunters regarding a dead buck pronghorn that was shot and abandoned. The reporting hunters stated that the individual who shot the buck pronghorn attempted to donate the carcass in addition to asking if they would tag the animal. The reporting hunters further stated that this particular individual possessed a doe pronghorn license and was unable to tag the buck pronghorn.
Instead of this individual coming forward and reporting the accidental or mistaken kill, the entire carcass was abandoned and the individual fled the scene.
Individuals who kill big game animals in Colorado and abandon the carcass may face serious charges including any of the following: felony charges, permanent loss of hunting and fishing privileges, and a potential prison sentence.
“Killing a buck pronghorn and abandoning the carcass is a serious offense, but the individual who did this still has an opportunity to come forward and turn themselves in,” Brown said.
The public is reminded that poaching is a serious crime and that poachers take away wildlife opportunities from responsible hunters and the citizens of the state of Colorado.
“In cases like this it’s important for the public to give officers an accurate vehicle description including the license plate, and any other details that might seem pertinent,” Brown said.
