Lodging Panel Approves Canyons and Plains Annual Request

The Prowers County Lodging Panel approved a $5,000 request from the regional tourism group, Canyons and Plains, for their continued activities in southeast Colorado. Their coverage area includes Prowers, Baca, Bent, Kiowa and Otero counties. Funds are used for an advertorial announcement in the nationally distributed Audubon magazine, as well as signage and information brochures for tourist sites in this part of the state.
Panel members plan to meet with the Prowers County Commissioners to discuss allowable funding for specific signage on a tourist kiosk recently set up in Granada. Similar kiosks have been erected in Eads, Springfield and Fowler, pathway points to direct tourists to particular areas of interest. Lodging Panel funds can be used only for marketing and not capital expenses. Panel members want a clarification from the commissioners is their funding could be used to create signs to attach to the Granada kiosk to promote events in Prowers County.
The Lodging Panel meets the third Tuesday of every month at 4pm at the PCDI offices at the Rodeway Cow Palace Inn. Organizations requesting funding to promote tourist oriented activities in Prowers County are asked to call 719-336-2384 for information on how to submit a proposal for Panel consideration.
