To the Editor:
During the past year we have had a considerable quantity of national news concerning many topics of national interest. The media as well as the government on the state and national level has been consumed with the national debt, health care, jobs, the economy, and many other very important topics we should all be concerned and thinking about.
One area that has not been reported on very much lately is the war in Afghanistan. My family was notified last Friday that my nephew, Staff Sgt. Robert B. (Brian) Cowdrey of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade out of Fort Bragg was killed in the Kunar province, in Afghanistan. He was a flight medic working on wounded coalition forces during a firefight when he was killed. We only bring this up to remind people that we still have men and women in uniform that are still involved in an active shooting war. In a little less than a month from now on November 11th, we will be observing Veterans Day. This is a day we set aside to honor those who have fought, who have been wounded, or died in the service of their country.
Whether you believe in the war or not, we must honor those who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedom. We are asking everyone to fly your American flag and say a prayer for the safety of our military personnel and their families that are on active duty as well as our veterans who have served our country honorably.
