Sixteen teams combined sport and spirit on Saturday, June 11, helping raise $11,000 in the 3rd Annual Southeast Colorado Cancer Initiative golf tournament at Spreading Antlers Golf Course in Lamar. Team sponsorships contributed $5,760 to the goal and hole and flag sponsors added $5,225 to the local cancer group. Various other donations including team prizes, a garage sale and cash donations added several hundred more dollars. The winning teams in both rounds donated their proceeds to SECCI as well.
The two first place teams were Ace Tire and 5 Rivers, second place teams were Eagles and Colorado Mills and third place finishers were JBS and My Wholesale Products. Closest to the pins on #5 or #14 went to BS Outfitter, closest on #5 or #17 was Tim Turpin who also got the longest putt award on #4 and Kathy Mauch got closest to the pin for #2 or #11.
There were 52 hole sponsors for the annual golfing contest and 16 teams including: Who Manufacturing, Mauch Farms, Stockmen’s Frontier Bank, Eagles, Colorado Beef, Heath & Turpin, Colorado East Bank and Trust, Colorado Mills, JBS 5 Rivers Cattle Feeders, Bettiann’s Touch Cookies, Parker Heat and Air, My Wholesale Products, Ace Tires, Five Rivers and Doug Hasser. Each year, the Lamar Chamber of Commerce Honkers contribute their time and energy to SECCI and the golf tournament. Thanks too, to Honker Mary Lou Austin for all her leg work involving hole sales, sponsorships and organization, and the Honker Crew that mans the 5th hole at the golf course each year, Val Baldwin, Cheryl Priesser and Holly Burton.
Cathy Buxton, one of the co-founders of SECCI, said this was the best tournament yet and offered her appreciation and thanks for everyone who made it possible. Southeast Colorado Cancer Initiative was organized over a decade ago in Lamar to help defray medical and transportation costs for cancer patients in southeast Colorado.
