Dry Spell Shuts Down Fireworks in Lamar

Press Release on Lamar Fireworks Ban

Date: June 17, 2011

With the extremely dry conditions around Southeastern Colorado the fire danger is much greater than usual. We request the community’s cooperation in minimizing the potential for accidental fires in Lamar this Fourth of July. Although City of Lamar Ordinance Number 971 allows certain types of fireworks such as small fountains, sparklers and spinning wheels, residents are encouraged to refrain from the use of all fireworks during these extremely hot and dry conditions. Prohibited fireworks include those that fly through the air or along the ground as well as those that have a report such as fire crackers or bottle rockets.

The Lamar Police Department will provide enhanced patrol during the days leading up to Independence Day. Officers will issue citations to anybody found to be violating City ordinances and all prohibited fireworks will be confiscated. Officers will also issue littering citations for any citizens leaving expended fireworks on public property.

The Lamar Fire Department and the Lamar/Prowers County Fire Department will still provide the annual public fireworks display at dusk on Monday July 4th. We encourage our community to come out to the area around the Prowers County Fairgrounds and enjoy that display instead.

(Editor’s Note)  Firework bans now exist in Holly, Lamar, Prowers County and Bent County.  The Las Animas City Council is meeting to determine their steps in light of the region’s dry conditions.  Those related stories are online on The Prowers Journal.com
