Lamar Homecoming & 50+Plus Reunion: Fun & Spirit

The gridiron rivalry between the Lamar Savages and Trinidad Miners was highlighted this past weekend with a homecoming parade along Main Street, a tailgate party and another victory for Lamar.
Graduates through the decades, sports teams and alumni boarded their floats from the North Side Park on Friday afternoon, October 9th for the trip down Main Street to Savage Stadium. While the football team suited up for an light warmup that afternoon, volunteers from the Sports Boosters Club were setting up tables and chairs and firing up the grill for the traditional hot dog and hamburger BBQ dinner just prior to the game.
About 200 or more persons were expected to show up, including many past alumni who come to town to take part in some of the reunion activities over the weekend, from the game on Friday, in which Lamar defeated Trinidad 33-21, to their own activities, culminating with a dinner on Saturday evening at the Rodeway Cow Palace Inn.
Each table had its own year for grads on Saturday night, some all the way back to 1946 and ’47. Each group mixed and visited during dinner downstairs, while the Class of 1995 held their own separate reunion upstairs in the Colorado room. The older grads put their voices together to sing their school spirit song, while last minute volunteers from DECA, FFA and 4H pitched in to seat the grads and look after their needs in the dining room. Other activities included some group meals, as well as trips to local sites, such as Camp Amache or John Martin Dam, while other grads just got together to do some shopping or reminisce. A few remained to share a Sunday breakfast at several local restaurants before traveling back to their distant hometowns, or for some, a trip just around the corner.
