Graveside services for Las Animas, Colorado resident, John Turner, affectionately known as Lewis, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the Manzanola Cemetery in Manzanola, Colorado. Pastor Rod Coulter will officiate.
John Lewis Turner was born on June 9, 1921 in Manzanola, Colorado to John William and Fannie (Torrence) Turner. He passed away on May 1, 2015 at his rural home near Las Animas, Colorado at the age of 93.
Lewis married Ethel Marie Singleton on July 15, 1943 and to this union, four children were born. Lewis and Ethel moved to Bent County in 1950 where he farmed and ranched. Lewis retired from farming and ranching in 2000. He worked as the Bent County Road Foreman for eight years. Lewis helped build La Junta Livestock Company and attended every anniversary sale that they had. Lewis was recently honored at their 60th anniversary sale. As well as restoring John Deere tractors, he actively participated in antique tractor pulls for years. He and his wife, Marie received numerous awards for their barbed wire and antique tool collection displays. Lewis was a member of the Bent County Roping Club and the Timberlake Grazing Association
Lewis is survived by his children, Ray Lewis Turner and wife, Gail of Hasty, CO, William Carl Turner and wife, Jean of Longmont, CO, Nancy Ellen McEnulty and husband, Jim of Penrose, CO, and James Allen Turner and wife, Mary Lou of Las Animas, CO; sister-in-law, Leona Turner of Manzanola, CO; eight grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; many other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel Marie Turner in 2006; brothers, Donald, Dale, and Marlin; and sister-in-law, Shirley Turner.
