LAS ANIMAS – Hans Hasser of Lamar was honored during the annual Bent-Prowers Cattle & Horse Growers Association banquet April 11th in Las Animas. Hasser, a fourth-generation rancher, was selected as the association’s prestigious Honorary Life Member Award recipient.

He has been an active member of Bent-Prowers Cattle & Horse Grower’s Association. He served as president of the multi-county organization twice, in 1995 and again in 2002.  In addition, he served on Colorado Cattlemen’s Association standing committees and won the state membership recruitment contest twice.

Hasser also served as advisor for the Southeastern Colorado Junior Cattlemen’s Association.  Presenter and last year’s winner Jo Ann McEndree of Springfield stated that Hasser “spent around 30 years helping the kids at local and state events. While all the years of service were happening, he was busy raising a family and working the ranch. He also spent many years as a mentor and coach for wrestling.”

Hasser, who pitched in to help with the day’s team sorting and social, was seated in the audience with son Cade Hasser and daughter Courtney Neuhold, as McEndree made the announcement. Stunned, he humbly thanked the association for the honor. The Honorary Life recipient lists include three generations of Hassers before him, adding Hans Hasser’s name to the elite list of those ranchers who provided extra service to Southeast Colorado’s beef industry.

Hasser’s honor highlighted the evening, which also included a cowboy punch bowl sponsored by La Junta Livestock Commission, and banquet, sponsored by the Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District. Prior to the brisket dinner, a lively auction raised money for both the Endowment Trust and the junior association. The festivities were held at the John W. Rawlings Heritage Center. The dance floor was set to motion by “Branded Heart,” a Baca County-based band.
