The Boy’s Free Throw championship competition on March 9th did not end as we had hoped. On Saturday, March 8, Bryan Ortiz played in the Regional playoffs in Pueblo. During that game with Granada, he re-injured his knee. Even though he had made a perfect score in the semi-finals, he was not able shoot on Sunday. Dreydon Smith of Walsh shot against Luis Yanez of Granada for the Championship. Both of these young men had scored 15 in their semifinal round. Because Bryan was not able to shoot on Sunday, Dreydon and Luis shot for the championship. Louis won 12 to 11 and was awarded the championship trophy. All three young men are either champions or honorary champions.
Steven Weber from McClave was crowned champion in the Boys Threes Competition. Steven brought his A game to the championship round and scored 12 out of a possible 17 to beat Sigi Avalos from Holly. Steven’s final round of 12 was the best round of any Three point shooter during the competition. Steve and Sigi are both sophomores and will be back next year.
The girls Frees competition, was the highest scoring of all the championship rounds. Taci Canfield of McClave and Karina Avalos of Holly competed in the Championship. Each young lady scored 15 points out of a possible 17. Because of this outstanding effort by both, they were named as co-champions and each received or will receive a trophy.
Both Ciarra Tate of Walsh and Karen Avalos of Holly shot well in the Girl’s Threes championship. Karen had the better championship round and won the championship with a score of 8. These two young women are to be commended for their skills and the effort put forth by each in this competition.
I want to again thank all the competitors who participated as well each coach and athletic director who assisted with making the competition a reality. I would also like to thank Lee, Cheryl, and Craig for helping make the championship round go as smoothly as it did. I would ask that Craig thank his softball players for giving up some of their practice time to help us.
Again, we thank all those who participated. The “Runnin Lopes” booster club believes that a 2nd annual competition is feasible. We are planning the competition for Feb 2nd , 9th, and 22nd in 2016. It is our hope to have at least 8 teams participate.
