The 2014 Wheat Field Day will offer growers insight into the highest-yielding varieties in the Colorado State University (CSU) Uniform Variety Performance Trial in Southeastern Colorado.

This year there will be a wide range of varieties, including advanced entries from Scott Haley’s breeding program, released varieties from CSU, varieties from other states (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana), and entries from five wheat seed companies (WestBred, Limagrain, Watley Seed, AGSECO, and AgriPro).

Dr. Scott Haley will describe the varieties in the trial and give us an update on issues related to breeding and variety development. Darrell Hanavan, the director of our wheat commodity groups will talk about CWAC/CAWG/CWRFlocal, state, and national wheat organization topics.  Dr. Tony Frank, CSU President, will give a University update as well as focusing on the outreach and extension efforts and the successes.

The June 12 Wheat Field Day and CSU Alumni Reunion will begin at 5:00 pm with refreshments.  The research plots are located at one of the Stulp Family fields located on County Road K in Prowers County.  From Lamar: 20 miles south on Hwy 287/385, 3.5 miles East on CR M, 2 miles South on CR 12, and 3.1 miles East on CR K (GPS: N 37° 46’ 28.4” W -102° 29’ 27.4”).

Like every year, there is no better place –no better forum –to educate yourself about the present and future status of wheat breeding and research than at the wheat field day. There are some good reasons to come: learn about wheat from the experts; visit with your friends and neighbors; and share a great meal. There are 115 CSU alumni living in Lamar, and 174 in Prowers County. The Alumni Association connects alumni to CSU in ways that are meaningful to them.

The field day is co-sponsored by the Stulp Family, CSU Extension, CSU Alumni Association, CWAC and Farm Credit of Southern Colorado.

Please RSVP by June 9 by calling at 719 336-7744 or registering at https://advancing.colostate.edu/EVENTS/LAMARFIELDDAY2014.
