Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area /Arkansas River (Lake, Chaffee and Fremont Counties)

Here’s an update from Greg at ArkAnglers:

The Arkansas River fishery continues to contend with high water from top to bottom with 6/2 flows of 1360 cfs in Hayden Meadows, 3760 cfs in Browns Canyon, and 4260 cfs in Bighorn Sheep Canyon. Some tributaries are showing signs of leveling out and as they recede, clarity will improve on them as well as the main stem. When the edges do begin to clear, big dark stonefly nymphs and large attractor dry flies will be the ticket for working shoreline pockets for hungry browns.

Update from 5/27:

The Arkansas River is now working its way through runoff, a process that produces days of dramatic flows but also interludes of quality fishing along the edges. River conditions are a reflection of air temperatures and direct solar radiation from the previous 2-3 days, the lag being the time it takes a change in weather to impact the melt cycle and then for that impact to be experienced down the tributaries and along the mainstem of the Arkansas. During times of stabilizing flows, the edges will clear and fish will feed opportunistically on whatever food is available. Anglers working large stonefly nymphs, streamers, or dry-dropper rigs with large attractor flies can take advantage of this “seller’s market” by targeting those locations where trout can escape the swift current. Don’t wade – rock-hop the shoreline and cherry-pick the best holding water for success with hungry fish!

Brush Hollow Reservoir (Fremont County)

No current update at this time.

Last report date: 5/13

Fishing slow for bass and crappie.  A few stocked trout being caught- Walleye has slowed.

Brush Hollow was stocked with 2,000 catchable trout on April 1.

Clear Creek Reservoir (Chaffee County)

Fishing from both the shore and boat remains good at Clear Creek Reservoir. Near the dam at the northern part of the reservoir, shore anglers caught several trout on orange PowerBait during the morning. At the boat ramp parking lot, bait anglers caught several trout by fishing the lake’s bottom with either rainbow PowerBait, worms, or rainbow Mike’s Glo Bait.  Fishing a bubble and fly with 18 inch leader around the dock has been very productive at morning. An angler caught a tiger musky on a Blue Fox Vibrax Minnow Spinner (size 1 and brown trout pattern) at the boat ramp parking lot. At the first parking lot area above the boat ramp, the trout went for yellow/corn PowerBait. Successful shore anglers at the upper part of the reservoir caught trout on green PowerBait and yellow Berkley’s Floating Magnum Eggs. One angler caught two tiger muskies on a rainbow trout pattern Rapala (size 7) near the inlet of the reservoir. Fly fisherman reported either red or green Wooly Buggers as being the most productive fly.  Morning anglers fared better at landing fish when compared to afternoon and evening anglers’ catch rates.

Boat fishing remains good. Boat anglers targeting kokanee salmon may want to troll with Tasmanian Devil lures during the morning. Trolling the southern part of the reservoir with gold or perch colored Kastmasters, brass/red spotted Jake’s lures, and perch Krocodile spoons were effective last week. No one reported landing a tiger musky from a boat.

The reservoir is closed to trailer and motorized watercrafts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Boating hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Midday water surface temperatures were in the mid 50’s F°.

Fishing in the Main Reservoir remains a little slow to start as water temperatures hang in the high forties to low fifties, surface temperatures are increasing as long as the days stay warm. Fishing success has been found by fishermen trolling in boat around some of the rocky shorelines and some shoreline fishing during the last few weeks typically in the afternoon time frame.

White bass have been hitting on hard baits and mussels. A few decent walleye are also being caught. Crappie fishing has been sparse at this point with only a few reported caught in the last couple of weeks.

Catfish are being caught fairly well in the Stilling Basin, most of the catfish are pretty small at this point.

Lake Pueblo State Park (Pueblo County)

Last update 5/27

It has finally arrived!  The official start of summer here at Lake Pueblo is marked by the Memorial Day holiday.  With the increase in fishing we have seen quite a few nice fish being brought in.  Walleye, Catfish and Trout are being caught on the lake with some near trophy size fish being netted.  the river flows have been raised to their summer levels, making fishing a little more tough below the dam.  The Anticline and Valco ponds have been productive and continue to be the most family friendly areas to try for a variety of fish.

The free fishing weekend is coming up on June 7th and 8th, which is a great time to take out a first time fisherman.  As always please continue to follow the rules and regulations regarding methods of take and bait use while on the river.  If you have any questions please stop at the visitor center or ask a ranger on the park.  Tight lines everyone!

Walleye are biting on various colored jigs. The bass and wiper have been caught on jigs and some bright colored lures. We did get a report of a 30 inch catfish caught this past week. With the water temperatures warming up the catfishing should start picking up.
