Lamar High School Weekly Sports Update, February 26, 2014

LHS_Spear NEW4Lamar’s student-athletes were very busy in the last week, with two teams participating in the postseason. The Savage wrestlers wrapped things up last weekend with a trip to the state tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver. As for the Lady Savages, they continued to roll along on their quest for a state basketball title.

Lamar nearly sent a full squad to the state wrestling tournament, with 13 young men qualifying for the event. Three brought home medals, including a third, a fourth and a fifth place. Kaleb Hansen earned third place at 138 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Petterson of Brush. Hansen won his first match of the event by pinning Humberg of Dolores Huerta in 5:00. He then lost a 6-3 decision to Sotelo of Valley, sending him to the consolation bracket. Hansen picked up four victories by decision in the consolation round to earn the third place medal.

Michael Johnson claimed fourth place at 120 pounds, winning his first two matches by pin, and then falling to the eventual champion, Piatt from Olathe (3:36) in the semifinals. A 10-5 decision over Kelley of Alamosa gave Johnson a shot at third, but the sophomore lost a 7-4 decision to Jaramillo of Platte Valley. Kyle Hicks brought home a fifth place medal at 195 pounds, winning his final match by sticking Mondragon of La Junta in 1:00.

Jesse Shelton (106) went 1-2 in his second tournament appearance, losing to the eventual champion in the second round. Cameron Batterton (113), Evan Reed (132) Cesar Serrano (160), Mario Morales (182) and Lucas Montgomery (285) all went 1-2, as well. Draven Adame (152), Colin Mahanay (170) and Tanner Crist (220) each went 2-2 in the event, and Ivan Villasenor (145) was the only Lamar wrestler to go 0-2. The Savages finished sixth in the team standings with 76 points. Valley won the team title with 141 points.

The Lady Savages pounded Buena Vista in the quarterfinals of the Tri-Peaks tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Lamar, behind 20 points from Chelsea Vallejos, defeated the Lady Demons 59-30 at the Community Building. The Lady Savages will face St. Mary’s in the semifinals on Friday. That game will take place at Pueblo Central High School, and tip-off is slated for 7 pm. The top seven finishers in the league will advance to the Class 3A state tournament.
